The cornerstone of palliative care is hope. What we have come to expect from medical science has made us believe that hope in health means long term treatment and cures. Yet at some point in our lives we all face death; Does hope just disappear? No, the hope we feel at our own or a loved one's end of life is no longer focused on cure but rather is focused on Quality of Life in whatever time that is left....

The Hospice Society of Greater Halifax has as its main objective the establishment of freestanding residential hospice facilities within the Capital Health District.

The Hospice Society of Greater Halifax is dedicated to supporting individuals with life-threatening illnesses and their families. We currently offer drop-in grief support. In the fall our services will be expanded to include support groups for caregivers and those living with life-threatening illnesses. Hospice palliative care volunteer training will also be made available in the fall.

The Society, formed in 2001, is a non-sectarian, mainly volunteer, registered charity. Our members come from many walks of life, but all share one common belief: that every individual has the right to expect the best possible quality of life until the very end of their life.

People who are dying have physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs, which are not being met in spite of the vast resources of our health care system. It is our belief that these needs can be met by the concept of Hospice.

Based in the community, a Hospice cares for the whole person and respects individual choice in defining Quality of Life.

The Society's second purpose is to bring those needs to the attention of the government and community at large.

We need your support to make these happen. For more information about hospice and palliative care follow the links or call us at 902-446-0929 or e-mail us at care@hospicehalifax.org.
